Darryn Lobb was born into a motor racing family on the 2nd May 1983. Since a very young age, Darryn’s father, Neil, competed in numerous motor racing events. Neil was a biker and competed at various levels of motor cycle racing throughout Darryn’s early years. This led to a love for motorsport, but more particularly, motorcycles. From the age of 11, Darryn competed in regional motor cross. It was not until 2001, that Darryn moved away from 2 wheels and into 4 wheels. A move prompted by his father’s transition to 4 wheel racing in the late 90’s.

In the 8 years since Darryn’s first car race in a Fiat Abarth 131 at the David Piper International at Zwartkops Raceway, Darryn has enjoyed numerous up’s, and down’s. His career started off in a Fiat 131 Abarth in the Historic racing series, progressing to regional racing in a TVR Chimaera, and then the graduation to National motorsport. His first taste of National racing was in 2004 in the Shelby Can-Am champion in a car owned by Rui Campos, who would, ironically, become one of Darryn’s fiercest competitors in the years to come. Darryn went on to win his first race in the series in 2005, and finally a South African championship in 2007.

Darryn made the move from Single Seaters to Tin Tops in 2008, racing for the Nissan Junior Team in the South African Production Car Championship. A tough season saw Darryn pull out of the championship before the end of the season, only to return to Shelby Can-Am’s in 2008. 2009 was a fantastic season where Darryn won his 2nd National championship with 2 rounds to spare. In addition, Darryn placed 7th overall, and 1st among the Road Racing Sports Car category in the 2009 Auto Racing Analysis Dominators result of winning percentage index’s. Darryn won a total of 10 races in the 14 which he competed in.

Darryn elected to remain in the Shelby Can-Am series for the 2010 season with the hope of finally being able to defend his national championship. At the final round of the championship at Kyalami in November, Darryn was once again crowned South African champion for the 3rd time in a championship that went down to the wire. Interestingly, Darryn once again, managed to win 10 out of the 14 races in which he competed.

Away from the race track, Darryn is a qualified Chartered Accountant, having finally graduated into the “big world” in 2010. Darryn currently works for The Hollard Insurance Company in Parktown, Johannesburg. Darryn forms part of the Mergers and Acquisition division responsible for short term equity investment for Hollard.
